10 Years of “GO:OD AM”

Why we think “GO:OD AM” is the perfect starting point for new Mac fans.

On this day 10 years ago, Mac released his album “GO:OD AM.”

As someone who knows all of Mac’s discography front to back—yes, Larry Lovestein, Delusional Thomas, Larry Fisherman, and all the hidden SoundCloud gems—this album has probably been the most consistent for me.

I start a lot of my mornings with “GO:OD AM,” and the other day, while driving early and listening (a form of caffeine for me), I had a thought: if someone has never listened to Mac Miller, “GO:OD AM” is the album to start with.

Hear me out…

“GO:OD AM” is the perfect mirage of classic Mac and elevated Mac. When I say elevated, I don’t mean better—I mean different. Mac grew and changed, and with that, so did the music. Some eras leaned more boom bap, others leaned straight jazz, but Mac was always experimenting.

His latest posthumous drop, “Balloonerism,” is proof of that. Many people think this unique album was created toward the end of Mac’s life, when actually it was made in 2014, in between “Watching Movies with the Sound Off” and “Faces.” Showing his range even from the earlier days was truly something.

From day one, he always stayed true to himself, and that authenticity comes through in his music.

The thought of where a new Mac listener should start, led me to think well ok if they listen to “GO:OD AM” first, what comes next? Which inspired me to make this web:

Not feeling like following the whole web today? No worries, here’s a straight recommendation too:

We challenge you to share this with a friend who has never listened to Mac!
