24 Hours In Buenos Aires

A look into the music and culture adorning the city.

Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina, and the door in and out of the country. This becomes relevant when you realize the amount of musical genres and scenes that have their “home-base” or culminating point in this city. Any new idea that wants to enter the country, or artists that are looking to leave, must step through this city. Leaving behind their own unique influence.

We’ll take a look into what movements and sounds you might encounter a typical day in this incredibly diverse and dynamic city.

Tango

When thinking about Buenos Aires, tango might be one of the first things that come to mind. Its origins trace it back to the Rio de la Plata region, between Buenos Aires and Montevideo.

Even though its mainstream success has declined over the years, tango's historical value can be felt and seen all over the city. From street artists to dance companies at the most respected theaters in the city, tango can be found in different shapes and sizes. One thing is for certain, there is no tango without Buenos Aires, and no Buenos Aires without tango.

Trap

If tango is Buenos Aires’s past, trap is its present.

Starting last decade, a transformation in the youth musical consumption began. Underground hip-hop artists started gaining more and more popularity, creating a subculture that would eventually become mainstream.

10 years ago you could walk through a park in Buenos Aires and come across a group of young men and women freestyle rapping, and battling one another for mere bragging rights. Those winners eventually started recording songs, collaborating, and creating communities with one another. Now, those same artists are selling out the biggest stadiums and arenas in the city.

There’s no doubt that trap has changed and matured with its audience, but its presence is still a huge part of the city, and has clearly influenced teenagers and young adults throughout Buenos Aires.
